It's difficult to get away the Yuletide spirit on a journey to Iceland throughout the holiday season - a stopover to Reykjavik will be full of a vast quantity of Holiday delight. The city goes wild for an excellent Christmas party, and commences ringing in the season at the end of November, with the lighting of the town's Christmas tree at Austurvöllur square. The merriment involves choirs singing carols and the arrival of the first of the "Vacation Lads," 13 Santas who perform throughout town during Lent.
Other preferred holiday spectacles feature the X-mas Village in Hafnarfjörður town, a tiny, joyful town chock-full of businesses offering vacation souvenirs and traditional foods amid live activities, and a visit to Reykjavik's primary Xmas Market in Ingólfstorg Square, which fills with vendors selling vacation souvenirs, mulled wine and performances from a wide variety of artists.
Finally, to experience an old-fashioned, Nordic Christmas, head to the Christmas show at the Reykjavik City Museum, where displays demonstrate how fried bread is crafted, tallow is used to make candles, and guests can master time honored Yuletide songs and dances.
